Indications of Fenat

Ketotifen is indicated in the prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma, symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions including rhinitis and conjunctivitis.

Pharmacology of Fenat

Ketotifen is a potent anti-allergic substance possessing a powerful and sustained non-competitive histamine (H1) receptor blocking property. Ketotifen inhibits the release of mediator (e.g histamine, leukotrienes and prostaglandins) from cells responsible for type (1) allergic reactions. Ketotifen also stabilizes mast cells, decreases chemotaxis, activation of degranulation of eosinophils. Also, it stabilizes mast cells & basophils and inhibits PAF (platelet activating factor) and is effective in preventing asthmatic attacks.

Dosage & Administration of Fenat

  • Adults: 1mg twice daily with food. If necessary the dose may be increased to 2mg twice daily.
  • Children from 2 years: 0.5mg to 1mg twice daily with food.
  • Elderly: Same as adults or, as directed by the registered physician.

Contraindication of Fenat

A reversible fall in the thrombocyte count in patients taking Fenat concomitantly with oral antidiabetic agents has been observed in a few cases. Although there is no evidence of any teratogenic effect, recommendations for Fenat in pregnancy or when breast feeding can not be given.

Interaction of Fenat

A reversible fall in the platelet count has been observed in a few patients receiving Ketotifen concomitantly with oral antidiabetics and it has been suggested that this combination should therefore be avoided. Since Ketotifen has the properties of the antihistamines, it may potentiate the effects of other CNS depressant drugs such as alcohol, antihistamines, hypnotics and sedatives.

Precautions & Warnings of Fenat

Post-marketing surveillance has shown exacerbation of asthma. Patient should be advised to avoid alcoholic drinks.

Composition of Fenat

Fenat Tablet: Each tablet contains Ketotifen Fumarate BP e.q. to 1mg Ketotifen.

Use of Fenat in Pregnancy

Pregnency category C. There are no adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant woman. It is not known whether kitotifen is exereted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when this medicine is administered to a nursing woman.

Use in Child of Fenat

The safety & effectiveness of this medicine in children with less then 6 months of age have not been established.

Side effects of Fenat

Dryness of mouth, slight dizziness and drowsiness may occur at the beginning of treatment.

Overdose of Fenat

Confusion, drowsiness, nystagmus, headache and disorientation may be reported features of overdosage of Fenat. Bradycardia and respiratory depression should be watched for. Elimination of the drug with gastric lavage is recommended.
